Don Cherry Kick

November 16th, 2008 by Holly

I’ve fund quite a few really great Don Cherry recordings over the past couple of months:

Tibet – This is a great album from Cherry when he was living in Europe and incorporating more global influences into the music along with his progressive-jazz style of trumpet playing.

Live at Cafe Montmartre 1966, Vol. 2
Live at Cafe Montmarte 1966 Vol. 2 – Another great live recording from 1966 when Cherry was playing with a group that included Gato Barbieri (at the high point (musically) of his career (in my humble opinion)).

Bitter Funeral Beer Band with Don Cherry and K. Sridhar Live in Frankfurt ‘82 – Another great session with Cherry guest starring with a larger ‘world music’ ensemble.

Behold! More Musac Gems…

September 24th, 2007 by Holly

If you have not heard the Mystic Moods Orchestra’s album, One Rainy Night…  I am so sorry…  I will pray for you…  :(

I don’t have any more of their albums, but if you have a recommendation, please send it along…

The Longines Symphonette Society – Love it or Leave it

September 24th, 2007 by Holly

And how could anyone leave it?  The Longines Symponette Society is one of the phattest groups around.  Sure, they have their unmemorable albums (the campfire songs one could be like that, I can’t remember (if that tells you anything)) but when you get one of their super 10 album collections (i.e.: 20 star guitar, The American Composers Hall of Fame) there are bound to be some musac gems…

Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake – From the River to the Ocean

September 18th, 2007 by Holly

I found another Great Album at e-music… this one by two true jazz powerhouses – Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake – From the River to the Ocean.

One of the things I like best about it is that all the tracks really bridge the gap between progressive and straight ahead seamlessly so that the music never entirely feels like either. And I may have missed this in his previous albums because the instrumentation was different, but In this album you can really hear how he has been influenced by Sonny Rollins. I might be crazy but I never noticed before how much his tone has in common with Rollins. This album reminded me (partially, I’m sure, because of the guitar) of The Bridge.

Go to the e-music where there are samples of each track. If you don’t feel like getting a subscription, get it at amazon.

This week at e-music… La Cave Saravah by Various Artists

July 30th, 2007 by Holly

La Cave Saravah – Most of the tracks on this compilation are pretty good but what really makes this album is, “For All We Know,” by Marva Broom and the Art Ensemble of Chicago (oh, how I wish there was an entire album from this pairing)… I can’t say enough about this song… take two parts late 60’s cheese plus 1 5/8 parts avante jazz group (AEOC)… Too damn short but serves 8-10! Speaks of what is to come in later years with AEOC and Fontella Bass, or “in Brazil” on there’s a Trumpet in My Soul from Archie Shepp… My favorite kind jazz/fusion from that era; The Jazz flows in and out… AEOC (especially Lester Bowie) and Shepp really excelled at it.

Also on this album are a couple of tracks from Brigitte Fontaine (one with Areski).

Some other good tracks that I can’t think of right now…

Hamid Drake, Albert Berger, William Parker

July 24th, 2007 by Holly

got these two excellent albums on e music

Evolving Silence vol.1

Evolving Silence vol.2

Two albums of fantastic progressive jazz from three of today’s best. Some songs are more contemplative and earthy. Then others are definitely more urban and “raw”. Great stuff…

Found these two at e-music

wfmu – I love this station

xhug – webcast from the University of Guadalajara. talk and music.

music.ahsodes.com- this site, currently, is basically a front end shell for my music database. In the future, when I have added more functionality to it, I would like for it to become a sort of musical zocalo… where people can share their ideas about music and recommendations…

bmoremus – This is the first incarnation of music.ahsodes… except here I was just putting up music that my friends and I liked…
